Grow Your Courage Muscles in Your Biz and Face Your Fears

Strengthen Your Courage Muscles in Your Biz

Why are you doing IT anyway? What difference are you making? Whatever IT is, a strong, compelling reason why you are doing IT creates the passion and excitement to move forward and strengthens your courage muscles when you run into inevitable obstacles.

Some reasons you may have started your business are:

  • You feel you can make a difference in your world with your products or services.
  • You love the flexibility of creating your own schedule.
  • You want a desirable lifestyle that includes the car, home, travel, and hobbies that are perfect for you.
  • You crave the freedom to live where you want and do what you want.
  • You want to donate to worthy causes.
  • You are passionate about fully using your skills, talents, and gifts.
  • You want to get out of debt.
  • You want to retire early.
  • You want to leave a legacy.
  • You plan to care for elderly parents.

Or you may have another reason. This list includes reasons I have heard repeated over and over during coaching sessions over the last several years.

Exercise:

Fill in this statement… I started my business because it is deeply important to me that I_________________(fill in the blank). As you start to line up with your true passion for your biz, move into reviewing the current status of your biz. Are you growing the way you want?

As you think about your business, make a list of all the reasons why you think you are not growing the way that you want. Get real with this list. Right down what you think. Maybe you have one reason or maybe you have twenty.  Then challenge each statement. Ask, “is this true?” Then ask, “What can I do about it?” As you come up with solutions, write them down. If you decide that something is out of your control (for example, new regulations), write a reframing sentence and choose to look at the situation differently.  Tax laws and other regulations are often changing and I see quite a few business people getting stuck in complaining rather than looking at ways to thrive anyway.

When you do this exercise, you own your power and your role as the driver of your success. It takes courage to ask tough questions and hold your thoughts up to the light.

When you review the solutions and the reframed thoughts that you just wrote down, make plans, decide to act. The most powerful catalyst for actions and results happens when you decide. “I decided” is so much more powerful than “I wish, I hope, or I’ll try”.

As you develop your plan for action, some fear probably will appear.

Run forward into your fears.

If you want to build courage and confidence, the only way to do it is to face what you fear. Being ruled by fear is an ego-based way to live. When you do the things you fear, you feel less and less fear. You step into a higher level of being and thinking. Your courage muscles get stronger. You can even begin to look at any fear you feel as potential growth.

You might even get to the point where you notice, “Hey, some fear is showing up, I have a huge opportunity here.”

In the past, I had a huge fear of rejection. I feared “no” more than anything else. I would do almost anything to avoid hearing a “no”. So guess what? I did a lot of things that would be considered picking “low hanging fruit”. I wasn’t willing to risk getting a no, so I often played small. However, I recognized this, and I kept learning and growing.  One day, I just decided that I was not going to have that fear anymore. I got honest about how much it was holding me back and I did a visualization exercise that helped me release this fear. I recognized when it first started and I released the fear by visualizing myself facing it down.

However, the exercise would have been meaningless if I did not back it up by action. I started asking for what I really wanted and what I felt was fair in every part of my life.  The fear of hearing a “no” fell away and was no longer an issue for me. I still get some “no’s” but they just roll off. Even if the “no” is disappointing (after all, we do want what we ask for), it is just part of the journey.  In fact, I now know that gracefully receiving a “no” is an important step to getting to more yesses. This was a huge confidence builder for me. It also helped me face other fears.

The truth is that most people will let the fear stop them from doing what they want.

Celebrate the challenges that your fears present to you. It means (amazon) growth, confidence, and courage when you do the thing anyway.
