Inner Peace and Productivity Day 2 of 12 Days of Holiday Joy
Have you ever had an unexpectedly long wait? Of course, you have. We all have those long hold times on the phone or in the doctor’s waiting room or the airport. Recently, I had a two-hour wait for my son. I was in the car waiting for him. The most difficult part is I didn’t know if it was going to thirty minutes or three hours.
I decided to be as productive as I could. I scheduled my mammogram and my physical for the first part of the new year. I canceled some services that had been on my to-do list for a while. (You know those seven to ten dollar a month subscriptions that you forget about and don’t call about because it seems like a little bit of money). I called my cell-phone company to ask a question about my bill. I called my health insurance company to make sure everything was in order for the next year’s plan. I called my health club to continue my membership hold due to Covid. With each call, I began to feel lighter and even exuberant. These were all things that I wanted and needed to get done, but it is so much more fun working with clients, wrapping presents, writing, reading, or just about anything else besides those pesky calls.
In the moment of choice, I could have been irritated at an unpredictable wait, but instead, I chose to look at the opportunity. I chose inner peace. I chose productivity.
Sometimes productivity seems to conflict with inner peace. When you have a day where you knock it out of the park and exceed your agenda or even your imagination for the day, sometimes it feels hectic and almost like too much energy. I love maintaining that delicate daily balance of being productive but being aware of the moment I tip over into overwhelm.
It’s a busy time of the year right now. It’s busy and it’s wonderful. You want productivity and you want inner peace. Here are few ideas to keep that balance.
- See opportunities rather than frustrations. Ask, how can I turn this around?
- Go for simplicity. Simplicity is elegance. You can always reduce and simplify. If you planned on twelve different baked goods, could you choose three or four?
- Maintain your most important traditions and incorporate a few new ones.
- Stay flexible. Who knew people would be having Zoom Christmas or much smaller gatherings?
- Plan a few things for after the Holidays so you don’t feel a big letdown.
- Keep your morning ritual. If you journal, exercise, plan your day, meditate, or something else, keep doing it. It’s only minutes per day, but your body, mind, and spirit will thank you.
- Pause and reflect, choosing daily gratitude.
- When you are busy, take breaks and change things up.
- Decide that you can maintain your inner peace and be productive. When you decide, you get rid of wishy-washy energy.

Lately, I have been taking time to smell soothing scents each morning (a Christmas blend of essential oils, a favorite perfume) while repeating my affirmations. It only takes a couple of minutes each morning but makes me feel better. I also find that taking regular walks outside helps me stay grounded — and I decided to be productive yesterday while waiting in a (socially distanced) line at the office supply store by checking through my email, reading updates and deleting those that I didn’t need.
