Take the Stress out of Your Holidays Day 3 of 12 Days of Christmas

Day 3 of the 12 Days of Christmas (Scroll down to learn how to enter the drawing for an Amazon Gift Card).

Would you love to have less stress during the Holidays? I can relate. The day before I flew to Beverly Hills from beautiful Colorado, I had a day packed full. My to-do list seemed endless and to top that off, just days before, Southern California experienced several severe fires.

The news showed pictures of fires burning next to the 405. I wondered if I should make my trip to work with one of my favorite clients. The forest fires and all of my friends in California were on my mind as I finished tasks that needed to be done before I left.

A beautiful thing happened though, I shifted into this amazing gear, I call and recognize it as the flow.

I packed for my trip, steam cleaned my carpets before putting up the Christmas tree, wrapped presents, donated a box of skates, brought Starbucks to my daughter at work, checked on my retirement plan and my HSA, cooked for Sunday dinner, made sure that my husband and son had clean clothes for the time I would be gone, finished some pieces that I was working on for my biz, and managed to sleep 4.5 hours. And I had fun and was full of inner peace (for the most part).

Anytime, I started to feel frantic, I brought my self back to center. I would consciously feel my feet on the ground and take a few breaths. I also kept rearranging my to-do list, some things got moved to the back burner.

As I kept my focus on what was most important, I felt great when I left for L.A. Monday morning. (I also slept hard on the plane).

As you look at my day, you might be thinking, “Why did she steam clean her carpets?” or “Why did the skates have to get donated that day?” or “Why did the tree need to go up? Couldn’t that have waited for 4 days?”

To me, it was about balancing all the aspects of my life. I normally put my tree up the day after Thanksgiving, but my girls were moving back home that week, so I had to move that date. I wanted my tree up before my trip. Or more specifically, I didn’t’ want to come home from my trip and decorate my tree. The carpets…I had been planning on steam cleaning the carpets after the move and I could not stand the idea of putting my beautiful tree up on a carpet that I felt needed to be cleaned.  The skates… I thought getting out of the house for a break and doing something good, would feel really good, and it did.

I sang songs for most of the day as I worked on my list. I was feeling joy and the thrill of a challenge. This day could have been full of stress, but I chose to perceive it as fun and I had fun.

Here are some quick tips for minimizing stress:

  • Make it fun.
  • Choose what is important.
  • Be willing to move around or remove things on your to-do list,.
  • Don’t get tunnel vision. Pay attention to all of your important areas in your life.
  • Keep realigning yourself to peaceful thoughts.
  • Recognize that your perception shapes the world you see. So you can have an instant miracle by seeing things differently.

I did make it to beautiful Hollywood. My first night, I went to The Ivy for dinner in Beverly Hills and enjoyed champagne, amazing conversation, and seafood risotto. I was able to breathe in the atmosphere and take in the holiday decorations and gorgeous roses at our table (see in the pic above and below).
