Master Your Mindset During the Holidays Day 5 of the 12 Days of Christmas

Day 5 of the 12 Days of Christmas

How to Master Your Mindset During the Holidays

How you think determines your perception, therefore your reality. So if you want to change your reality, it starts with your thinking. During the festive holiday season, it is likely that your activity level will increase. You will have more to do.  Falling into thinking traps becomes so easy. You might forget to do the things that keep you grounded and centered like exercise, writing in a journal, meditation and prayer, deep breathing, and quiet time.

When you step away from your center, ego takes over. Suddenly, you are insulted and angry because people don’t say thank you, or the person in line ahead or behind you is rude. You feel like your colleagues don’t appreciate you. You forget that people are human and not perfect. Your happiness dips and you may slide into overwhelm.

Your world is created by how you think. Earlier this week, I wrote about “the pause.” Where you pause before you speak or act. You can also use “the pause” to adjust your thinking. For example, when someone doesn’t say thank you, you pause and reframe the situations. Maybe that person is distracted, stressed, or worried. Maybe the person was just forgetful in the moment. Maybe you can do nice things without depending on being thanked.

Happiness is a decision. You can choose to be happy. You can make that choice without it being contingent on job offers, money, status, relationships. etc.

Success is a thought choice, too. When I coach people, I foster the idea that you are a successful writer, actor, coach, healer, or business person before the book gets published, the role is landed, or the clients come in.

Success happens first in your thoughts, then in the daily actions and it is in the present moment.

Inner peace is also a choice. You can have inner peace even if there is chaos around you. You can choose to be grounded and centered even in an emergency.

Master your mindset even when you are incredibly busy by:

  • Hitting your thought reset button when you feel like you are off your inner game.  This starts with a pause, and then you can even mentally or actually say, “I reset. I choose to think…(fill in the blank)”.
  • Practicing compassion for others. A little love and understanding go along way.
  • Practicing patience. Being impatient does not make a line move faster. Being impatient does not contribute to inner peace. Deep breaths help. Doing a body scan and noticing muscle tension will help. When you notice tense muscles, mentally say, “Relax, let go.”
  • Staying grounded. Do the actions that keep you centered. Make time for these. If you normally write in your journal for 30 minutes, even 5 minutes will help. If you exercise for an hour normally, and you only have 10 or 20 minutes, it will still help you.

  1. yes! the reset button is always there for us! grounding myself and practicing my normal self care is crucial during the holidays to keep myself feeling in control of myself. taking those quick moments to do my routine of reading & meditating really do allow me to replenish and relax. even a quick gratitude walk helps. i have to remember to not get caught up by my perfectionism & just do what i can to manage all expectations. thank you for this post.

  2. Hi Sheri
I love the reminder to pause to adjust my thinking. I’m am going to practice this concept.
To keep doing things to stay grounded and centered even if they are for a shorter period of time.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
    Sending you love and light,
