How to Create a Compelling Life Vision
Summer has always been a highly creative time for me. I love sitting on my deck, walking by the creek that runs through our neighborhood and driving into the mountains reflecting and dreaming. Even when I was a kid, I would lay on a blanket in my yard surrounded by books and magazines dreaming about what I wanted to do with my life – when I grew up. I would cut out pictures and daydream. My imagination would run wild. It turns out that joy and the ability to imagine has served me well throughout my adult life. I dreamed and thought big even as a young one, even though I didn’t know that is what I was doing.
Did you know that many people stop thinking big and dreaming big when they “grow up”? They get caught up in survival mode or what is even worse is having goals to just be a little bit better. I often hear people say, “I want to make more money.” I will ask, how much more?… and they don’t know. When pressed, they might say something like, I just want the room to breathe at the end of the month or I just want to take a comfortable vacation.
The problem is that goal to just be a bit better is what keeps you from really doing what you would love to do.
So why do people default to the just a bit better mode? Well, for most of us, we haven’t been taught to think big or even to think forward into the future. for every area of our lives. People don’t think- what kind of parent or grandparent do I want to be in three years? What goals do I have for my family? Or what do I want my business to look like in three years? Or what do I want my workouts to look like in three years? Where do I want to be traveling to and with whom?
Why create a life vision? When you create a detailed life vision, you can reverse engineer it and make the daily decisions now, that will keep you moving forward.
Get started on your life vision:
Allow your dreams to come forward. Consider what you would love to have in all areas of your life. What would you love to expand on and what might be new directions? What are your core values (examples: accountability, family time, kindness, making a difference, etc)? For each part of your vision, know why it is important to you.
Ask questions. What do I enjoy? What don’t I enjoy? What makes me feel accomplished? What brings joy? What do I want to be known for? or what is my legacy? What are my strengths?
Visualize exactly what you will be doing in each part of your life three to five years from now. If you lift weights- what will your lifting workout look like? If you run, are you running a race or improving your time? What do you want to be doing with your family? Trips? Activities? How will you spend time with each other? The more detailed you can be, the better. If you run a business, what will your business model look like? How will you be interacting with clients and customers? Who will be on your team? How much money will you be making? What difference are you making? Map out every area.
Write out your vision. It will probably be four or more pages. It won’t happen overnight or in just a couple of hours. It’s worth it to put in the time to be a deliberate creator. Once you are finished, this is a living document. It can change as you change, but it will give you a sense of direction and help you reverse engineer your vision down to the 30, 60, 90 and 12-month plans with action steps.
When I talk to potential clients, I often hear, “I know I need to spend some time mapping out my vision, but I don’t have time.” What if you chose something that would help you make the time to do this highly important success step?
I created a NEW workshop- Living Your Vision and we start next week. The Living Your Vision Workshop was created so you can map out a compelling vision for your life. What is a compelling vision? It lights you up, and yet it holds enough detail so you know where you clearly want to be. It provides a roadmap that will guide you when you feel lost.
