Day 7 of the 12 Days of Christmas
What to Do When Plans Change
As you come closer to the end of 2017, Christmas and other Holiday Traditions, you also face other endings or results that are perhaps different than what you expected.
As you review your end of year for your business, you may have exceeded your expectations, but maybe a few things didn’t work out the way you thought they would.
Children and young adults have final exams and may be surprised happily or unpleasantly. Maybe you worked hard for an award or bonus and it didn’t work out the way you thought.
This is also the time of year when high school students and athletes are learning about scholarship opportunities and for some, early acceptance to colleges.
Maybe you thought you would travel to family or they would travel to you, or your grown children make different plans for the holidays and you were expecting them to be with you.
Disappointment is one of the most crushing feelings. It’s not a tragedy which shoots adrenaline through you, but instead, it is a feeling of rejection or falling short. Often people will stuff disappointment down, become silent, or project anger into other areas.
Being willing to face disappointment and deal with it, is an incredible opportunity for growth. How you handle disappointment is a predictor of success.
Handling a change or disappointment starts with managing your emotions. Let yourself fully feel. It may be helpful to talk about it or write in a journal about it. Using EFT (tapping) can be especially helpful. A long walk or run can allow time to process and clear your head.
Avoid blaming yourself or other people. If you watch sports, you will often hear people criticizing the coach or certain team members because everyone wants a reason why a loss happened. When two teams play, one team wins. Yes, analyzing things to improve performance is an important step, but avoid creating scapegoats.
Keep your focus on the big picture. In the grand scheme of life, does one vacation, one test, one award, one job, one bonus really matter that much?
What can you learn from the situation? Is there anything you could do differently in the future? Do you need more skills? Do you need to be more flexible? Do you need to practice risk management?? Do you need to be more prepared?
Keep going. Don’t let a disappointment derail you or make you lose confidence. Try it again, or try something different. View disappointments as part of your journey. Life changes. Sometimes we feel changes are pressed upon us, other times we are change initiators. Even good changes cause stress. In general, people don’t like changes. When you can teach yourself to adapt quickly and accept changes, disappointments, and disruptions in stride, you up-level your success skills. It is through change, that we grow.
