Make a Difference Do Something

If you feel like you are standing on shaky ground you are not alone. George Floyd’s senseless murder rocked the world and brought racism and police reform to the forefront. In addition, we are still in the midst of a pandemic, financial vulnerability, and some random looting in communities that have hurt business owners. And families of police officers all over are experiencing their children being harassed with words like- “your dad is a killer”.

I was in Charleston on King Street the day after businesses were vandalized and people were cleaning up. Yet my hometown had a completely peaceful demonstration and so did my community that I live in now and so did many towns and cities.

However, suddenly everywhere people on social media were virtue signaling and moralizing telling people how they should feel and should act. If you are wondering what virtue signaling is- here is the definition: Virtue signalling is the popular modern habit of indicating that one has virtue merely by expressing disgust or favor for certain political ideas or cultural happenings.

I love Paulo Coelho’s quote

“The world is changed by your example, not your opinion.”

Paulo Coelho

My own approach is to examine my heart. I held conversations with people close to me to discuss what has happened and ways to help.  I have struggled with words to express my sadness over George Floyd. I believe action is more important than words. I researched and found a charitable organization that helps support the education of black young people: The Thurgood Marshall College Fund.  Educational opportunities change lives. I  found my way to help make a difference. I share this with you not to say I am a good person because I donated. I am sharing this with you because one of my black colleagues shared her gratitude with me when I told her what I was doing instead of just being silent about it.

I have appreciated black leaders and friends who have shared how to make a difference and that there are many ways to make a difference. One person can’t do everything. But one person can do something. This isn’t a call to protest or a call to do anything in particular, it is a call to find ways to make a difference in your own way to help make the world a better place that makes sense and feels right to you.

“If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward”

Martin Luther King, Jr.
