Your alarm clock goes off and….? What happens? Do you hit the snooze alarm a few times or do you wake up dreading the day because you have so much to do? Or do you wake up right away and jump into your day only to find that you are barely making a dent in your list of everything you have to do. You are doing the best you can, but maybe it doesn’t feel like it.
You have a lot on your plate, so do I, and so does almost everyone I know. Somedays, you might get that feeling of “Wow, I got a lot accomplished” and other days it feels more like spinning your wheels.
I can handle a packed schedule and I do tend to be productive, but there are days when I don’t feel clear direction and my focus is off. I don’t mind big projects, in fact, I love big projects. What I do mind is when my mind is scattered. That’s when I bring out my toolbox. This toolbox includes the things I do when I don’t know what to do. I turn to my toolbox when I am overwhelmed and feel burdened by tasks. And guess what? You can and I encourage you to use these tools even when everything is going great so you can stay in that amazing mental energy.
Here’s what works for me and countless clients.
1. Keep doing the things that keep you centered. Create the time for this. Tools that keep you centered are high-quality habits like journaling, exercising, and meditating. After working with clients for twelve years and in the business world for almost 30 years, these high-quality habits are often the first thing to go because there is no urgency to them. Let go of the idea that these habits are not important. Your clear-headed thinking and your health depend on them.
2. Research possibilities. If you have an endless list of important tasks, find out if there is an easier way to get them done. Most likely someone else has attempted what you are doing or even written a guide about it. Perhaps there is an app or service that can help you. For delegating tasks to virtual assistants, I like (affiliate) Task Bullet
3. Make a list of everything on your mind and then review the list and assign numbers. I don’t mean number one through 50. I mean everything that feels like a number one priority, put a 1 next to it (you could have five or more ones), then go to 2 and write a two next to all the tasks that feel like a number two priority. Keep going. If your task is a 4 or maybe 5 in the first pass of your list, you may want to backburner it. Then go back to your list with all of the numbers assigned. Review your ratings for accuracy, then you can go back to all of your ones and prioritize them if possible. If you cannot, then start with the one that is most appealing to you, makes the biggest impact, or is the most urgent.
4. Use energy psychology techniques like EFT, acupuncture, massage, CBT, NLP, affirmations, self-hypnosis, hypnosis, guided meditation, mindfulness meditation, yoga, and/or energy healing. These techniques shift your energy levels, your limiting beliefs, and help you relax. A relaxed mind is a more creative mind. A relaxed body is more supportive of an active lifestyle. Find an expert, read a book, or take a class.
5. Practice deep breathing for a fresh perspective and clear mind. Breathe in for 4 counts, hold, breathe out for 4 counts. Deep breathing is the easiest, but often the most overlooked technique. Don’t dismiss it because of simplicity. Or try a different breathing technique. Search breathing techniques on youtube, and you will find one or more that you like.
6. Practice Affirmations “I am open to the solution.” “I am solution-focused”. “I am a deliberate creator.” “I am creative.” “I choose happiness as my state of being.” “I choose abundance as my state of being.” You can even tap on energy points as you say these affirmations. See the diagram below.
7. Be open-minded. Welcome new ways of looking at your to-do list and your goals. What can you automate? What can you delegate? Can you cut out steps? Can you eliminate it? Read Ari Meisel’s book (affiliate) The Art of Less Doing.
8. Do what you love. Do you spend most of your life doing what you truly love? If not, can you rearrange it or shift your thoughts about what you are doing? You are the boss of your life. You are the CEO of your life. You own your time. Notice how things shift when you acknowledge your power and choice. Live your life to the fullest. What are you putting off that you would love to do? Is there any reason why you couldn’t start some part of it today?
