12 Days of Joy Day 7

Increase your joy through random acts of kindness. This season, I have been both the receiver and giver of these random acts of kindness. I was in a long line at the grocery store and I let the person behind me go in front of me. The gentleman was hesitant and I insisted and said Merry Christmas. As this man began to check out, I ran into a friend of mine. I hadn’t seen him in over six months. He gave me a big smile and started talking about how happy he was that I was still alive. We talked for a few minutes and I know for the people around us, it became clear that I had been critically ill. Suddenly, everyone around us went from tense and crabby to light and happy.   We all had that moment of realization that life is so precious and we got to share it with each other.

Random acts of kindness give pleasure to both the giver and the receiver in a way that cannot be replicated through other types of giving.

A random act can be huge or very tiny. My daughter received a $1000 tip from one person at her serving job. It made a huge difference in her life. That night on Christmas Eve, the service was about paying it forward and she started thinking about how she could make a difference for someone.

You can start at any point and make a difference in someone’s life. I have received free Starbucks from the person in front of me and I have purchased Starbucks for the person behind me in the drive thru.

One of my holiday traditions is that I put money in every single Salvation Army bucket I see. I love doing this and every year I set my intention to give more each time.

When I was first married over 20 years ago, we didn’t have a lot of money. I think that year we weren’t even sure that we would be able to buy presents. I knew it was important to have the feeling of giving. I heard on the radio that a battered women’s shelter needed blankets. Aha. I had extra blankets. So I piled my extra blankets in my car and drove to the shelter. I felt so good that I could give.

If you are feeling down, or even if you want to go from feeling okay to feeling amazing; initiate a random act of kindness today. Not only will you feel amazing, it’s a huge key to joy and abundance. Give generously in any way you feel led.

  1. This is a great reminder we do not have to look far or do something extraordinary to enlighten another’s day!!!!
How beautiful to be a recipient of a sincere smile — always makes my day!

  2. Even what we may think of as a very small gesture can have a huge impact for another person.
