5 Simple Ways to Create a Happy, Joy-filled, and Profitable Biz

5 Simple Ways to Create a Happy, Joy-filled, and Profitable Biz

It was a cold, but sunny day in December of 2007 when I first clicked the publish button on the website for my new coaching business. My business model at that time was coaching for an hourly or monthly rate to individual clients with a few keynotes and corporate team building sprinkled in. Soon, I was burned out and frustrated with the amount of time I spent trying to grow my business and I wasn’t making much money. My business model couldn’t support the revenue goals that I wanted. I felt lost.

When you own a business, there are multiple moving parts. The opportunities and options often seem to have an endless variety of combinations. It can quickly get frustrating and overwhelming.  Did you know it can be simple?

Finding my sweet spot was an 11-year process, and it is still ongoing. I learned that simple is always the best. I often ask, “How can I make this simpler, easier and more fun?” I never want to stop learning and growing.

I loved my clients and I loved running my own company, but I had to figure out a different way. Over the years, my business model has evolved to include workshops, ecourses, live events, group coaching, masterminds, one on one coaching, books, and more. At times, my model was too big and too complex.

Though technology may change, and ideas come and go, there are 5 simple, key elements of a successful, happy, and joyful business that stay the same.

These 5 key areas are:

  • You
  • Your Optimal Result
  • Your Optimal Client
  • Your Strategy,
  • And the Magic Sauce

The biggest impact on your success in business starts with YOU.

Though it is tempting to forgo sleep and self-care to get one more thing done in your biz, it is a quick way to failing. You only have one you. You are the one that drives everything in your business. You are its most prized asset.

Create success habits to boost your personal energy. Practice high energy habits. Get up early, journal, exercise, use structure, and practice self-care. Your energy is attracting your results.

Negative thoughts and energy pull constantly. Build a powerful mindset by focusing on your why, your reason for being in business.

Control your environment. Environment wins over will-power so create an inspiring environment by surrounding yourself with inspiring books and people. Create a “no-fail” environment. Get rid of clutter. Create open space.

The first main key was all about you, this next key area is all about your clients and customers.

Your Optimal Result

Be clear about your Optimal Result. This is your promise. This is the problem you solve for people. Make it specific. An example optimal result is: I work with business owners who struggle with making a difference and making a profit. I help them with a clear plan for profits, so they can relax into making money in their businesses.

Your optimal result should answer these questions:  Who do you help? What do you deliver? What difference does it make?

Your optimal result should be simply explained. Avoid jargon or being overly wordy.

Your Optimal Client

After you know what you will be delivering and have an idea of who you help, you can dive deeper into your optimal client profile. You could also call this your ideal client or your client avatar.  You can base this on a real person or persons or a combination of traits. Think about ordering your optimal client from a catalog, but you get to create the description. You can have demographics like age groups, but you can also add behavior characteristics. For example, “my optimal client is kind, loyal, generous to other people, open to new ideas, enjoys learning”, etc. Each time you have an experience that you don’t like, you can turn it around and write down the opposite. For instance, if you have a wishy-washy client, you could write the opposite: My optimal client is on-time for each appointment, etc. The more detail you write, the more likely you will attract your exactly right people. Consider this a living document. It will change as you and your business change.  Who would you love to work with?  What would be fun?

When you are clear about your optimal client, you can write your marketing messages directly to this person.

Your Strategy

The fourth idea is your strategy. You can develop a strategy when you understand yourself, your business promise and your optimal client. Your strategy will involve creating plans, setting goals, and implementing action steps.

Your Skills

You started your business with a skill set, however, you may need to develop some skills, learn new skills, and/or hire people with skills.

Your Intuition will help you with your strategy.

Pay attention to intuitive hits and synchronistic moments. My best ideas come to me in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning. You can develop your intuition by asking questions. What is my next step? How can I make XYZ work out? Where can I find the people I need? And so on. You will still conduct research, but intuition is valuable.

One sheet plan

As part of your strategy, create a one-sheet plan that includes your personal goals and your business goal in a big picture way for the year. For example, when I say, I am taking 6 vacations. I don’t have to have each vacation described in detail on this one sheet. You might include a biz revenue goal or signature program goal. Make your plan fun. Build fun into your life.

Long term plan.

For fun, you could create a 50 or 100-year plan. What if we all lived to 150 or more? What would you want to do? This helps you think about your legacy.

When you have created plans, you can reverse engineer them to determine daily and monthly action steps.

Investing for growth is part of biz strategy, too.

Are you investing in training, advertising, infrastructure, product development, etc? Don’t be stingy with your business. You do need to manage expenses, but don’t stunt the growth of your biz because you are not investing wisely.

Marketing strategy is one of the most important pieces and often is an area where biz owners do not feel confident.

Start with your free opt-in. You might have a free report, a webinar, and/or an ebook. Send optimal client prospects to your entry points (free opt-in). Be sure to have CTA’s (call to action) in all your free gifts.  Market where your optimal client is hanging out. Watch your stats when you advertise. Adjust accordingly. Try things out. You learn by doing. Yes, do research and learn, but ultimately, you need to jump in.

One of the simplest ways to market for coaches or service professionals is to offer one webinar or video with a call to action that leads to a consultation. Then a consultation to a signature program that could be one on one, a group, or a hybrid.  It is easier to sell a larger package than to sell a lot of lower-priced items, and your client gets better results, too. The key to success is to perfect each element of this method. You also need to bring enough traffic to the webinar or video.

If you own a retail biz, you might offer a coupon, an event, a tip sheet, etc. Then, be sure to offer packages, not just onesie products, discounts on shipping when you buy more, loyal customer bonuses, subscription boxes.

The Magic Sauce

When you think you are done with anything, do this. By this, I mean the magic sauce I mentioned earlier. When you finish something like a video, a blog post, a course, an email, a sales letter, and you think you are done, go back and make it even better. Add something or take something away. Give it a little more pizzazz. This bit of “extra” makes you stand out.

This article include many ideas, take one idea and implement it right away. That one idea might be a daily journaling habit, or that one idea might be getting clear about your optimal client, etc. Just start.
